Top 25 MPH Nutrition Programs for 2019

Nutrition is an often-overlooked aspect of public health, passed over for the more news-worthy items like epidemics and environmental crises. But it’s important to realize that many of our largest public health issues – such as obesity, heart disease, and even cancer – could be alleviated, if not eradicated, with better nutrition. Because nutrition is so key to overall health, helping communities improve their nutrition and understanding the ways that food access influences population health is central to public health.

Public health professionals who want to specialize in nutrition can go about it several ways. Some public health schools offer a specialized MPH in Nutrition, while other schools offer dual degrees combining and MPH with an MS in Nutrition; some even provide a path for students to become registered dietitians in addition to a public health master’s. While most are on-campus (particularly those with an RD path), some are available in a fully online format from some of the most prestigious public health schools in the world.

Methodology: How We Ranked the Best MPH Nutrition Programs

To rank the best master’s in public health nutrition programs, MPHOnline editors searched out accredited MPH programs offering nutrition concentrations, or combined programs with public health and nutrition elements. From our initial list, we ranked programs according to three main factors: Reputation, Salary Potential, and Tuition Costs. Data was drawn from College Scorecard, IPEDS, and Niche. This combination of criteria, we believe, indicates to students that they can trust their MPH in Nutrition to have a real return on their investment and a real impact on their careers.

1. University of California Berkeley – Berkeley, CA

20. The University of Massachusetts (UMass) Lowell — Lowell, MA

The University of Massachusetts’s (UMass Lowell) College of health and Sciences offers an on-campus Master of Public Health with a specialty related to Dietetics — the only program of its kind available in the New England portion of the United States.
